A video showing Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra seemingly putting her handbag under a table, reportedly an expensive Louis Vuitton bag, when price rise was being debated in the Lok Sabha was shared on social media, with many claiming she was attempting to ‘hide her expensive bag.’
Bollywood actor Swara Bhasker came to Ms. Moitra’s defense, saying she never seemed to have hidden her Louis Vuitton bag. Bhasker believed the whole controversy discredited an ‘independent, vocal woman’ with a ‘flourishing corporate career and who bought branded items with her own hard earned money?’
Swara Bhasker tweeted it is a stylish handbag that she (Mahua Moitra) ‘always flaunts in style.’
BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla called Mahua Moitra ‘Marie Antoinette’ for the alleged move.
‘A party that believes in TMC — Too Much Corruption discusses price rise after not cutting VAT and alliance with UPA that gave run away inflation of 10% plus,’ the BJP leader tweeted.
Ms Moitra countered the allegations by sharing a collage of photos on social media, where she was snapped with the bag.
‘Jholewala fakir in Parliament since 2019. Jhola leke aye the jhola leke chal padenge ,’ she tweeted in a sarcastic jibe at PM Modi’s famous comments.
‘Modiji sent me some of the proceeds after auctioning his INR 10 lakh suit. I bought a handbag and used the rest to pay lawyer fees,’ she tweeted as a user asked about a legal petition she filed against the Government of India, over the term extension of the ED director.
