The Indian Premier League (IPL) clash between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Royal Challengers Bangalore has been postponed as Covid-19 hit has hit KKR camp very badly.
KKR team players Varun Chakravarthy and Sandeep Warrier have tested positive for coronavirus, according to an official statement by the IPL governing body BCCI on social media.
Widely claimed as the ‘safest’ place to be in India at the moment with the second wave of the pandemic raging on, particularly in Delhi, where a few of the matches have been held, this breach is likely to cause a flutter among the teams and officials alike.
Among the other Kolkata players, Aussie bowler Pat Cummins, who was in the news recently having donated $50,000 to the PM-CARES fund, is said to be feeling unwell, with no option to return home now, as countries have shut off air travel from India. A few other players from different teams have also reported feeling unwell and await test results.
These developments mean the Kolkata team may have to remain in quarantine for the next two weeks, leading to the IPL 2021 match schedule going haywire.
Will this mean that the entire tournament may be postponed hereafter, as many have questioned the need, and indeed the sensitivity, of the authorities to decided to hold it in the first place, given the current grim scenario in the country?
