Moving up 17 places from last year’s rankings, the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-B) is India’s leading institution on the prestigious QS World University Rankings. Ranked at 162, IIT-B displaced IIT Delhi this year, the latter retaining its 172 position. The IITs in Madras, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Roorkee and Guwahati also found a place within the top 500 universities in the world. The Indian Institute of Science (Bengaluru) ranked at 170.

IIT-B and IIT-D are followed by IIT Madras at 264, IIT Kanpur at 283, IIT Kharagpur at 295, IIT Roorkee at 381 and IIT Guwahati at 472.
Apart from the IITs, which have always been among the best engineering schools in the world, Delhi University also finds a spot in the first 500, standing at 487.
Other Indian universities between 500 and 1000 include BITS Pilani, Vellore Institute of Technology, Calcutta University, Mumbai University, Savitribai Phule Pune University, Amity University, Ashoka University and Jadavpur University.

The recently published list for 2019 features Massachusetts Insitute of Technology (MIT) occupying the coveted position at the top of the list for the sixth year running, followed by Stanford University, Harvard University and California Institute of Technology (CalTech) as the four best colleges in the world at the moment. Other prestigious universities like Oxford, Cambridge, Princeton, and Yale occupy their usual spots among the top 20.
As with previous years, this year’s list too features more technical and engineering schools in comparison with those dedicated primarily to liberal arts and humanities.
The QS system, one of the most widely-regarded systems of university ranking, comprises the global overall and subject rankings alongside five independent regional tables, namely Asia, Latin America, Emerging Europe and Central Asia, the Arab Region, and BRICS.
