Honour For PM Modi: What Is The Druk Gyalpo?

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday was conferred with Bhutan’s highest civilian award, adding to the PM’s long list of awards and a testament to the friendly ties between the neighbours.

While conferring the award, Bhutan King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck highlighted India’s support to Bhutan under PM Modi’s leadership over the years and particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Order of the Druk Gyalpo  (Order of the Dragon King) or ‘Ngadag Pel gi Khorlo‘ is the highest decoration of the Kingdom of Bhutan, awarded in recognition of a lifetime of service to the people and Kingdom of Bhutan.

It was founded on 7 November 2008 by the King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck to reward those who have devoted a lifetime of service to the nation and people of Bhutan.

Existing in two categories or classes, it is the pinnacle of the honor system in Bhutan and takes precedence over all other orders, decorations and medals.

Manufactured in sterling silver, the First Class comprises a Breast Star and Sash Badge while the Second Class has a Sash and Badge.

PM Modi thanked Bhutan’s King after the award and said India will always cherish the country as one of its closest friends and neighbours.
