Here’s how Google can now help you find your ideal job

Google can now help you land your dream job! A year after the job search tool was launched in the United States, the global search engine finally inaugurated the feature in India on Monday.

google for Jobs will now enable the software application and Google browser to list job openings for job-seeking Indians, based on corporate vacancies, user demands and job profiles.

Here’s what happened

Google searches with keywords like “jobs near me,” “jobs for freshers,” or “content writing jobs” will now yield results that cite openings sourced from over a million listings, including over 90,000 employers nationwide.

Google has enlisted the help of job aggregators like LinkedIn, QuikrJobs and Shine.com to set up an entirely autonomous and customised hiring platform which works based on the keywords you enter. The platform enables you to look for jobs across all industries and at all levels—entry, graduate or experienced, including jobs that have traditionally been much harder to search for and classify like service and retail jobs, according to CEO Sundar Pichai.

At the same time, you can narrow your search with the help of filters like job preference, title, location, profile, contract type and aptitude.

However, unlike the US platform, it hasn’t yet incorporated salary listings, expectations and comparison stats, which makes it difficult to filter roles by remuneration range and avoid cheapskate hirers.

Why you should care

The paradigm shift from a mobile-first to an AI-first world has made it possible for Google to infiltrate into so many aspects of our lives, and for us to experience Google in so many important and previously unimaginable ways. Pichai penned a poignant article last year called Making AI work for Everyone, saying this shift isn’t just about building futuristic devices or conducting cutting-edge research, but about helping millions by “democratizing access to information and surfacing new opportunities.”

Google for Jobs has attained considerable success over the last year, in notifying job seekers of new opportunities and connecting companies with potential employees. In India, it seeks to solve a similar problem, especially where employers say they are unable to fill open positions, and the labour market is unaware of a job opening. The relevant job alerts and associated search results will not only contain information about the company and the role but also redirect you to various platforms where you may apply for the said role. It also allows one to save listings for future reference and set up email alerts for most regular and relevant searches.

Often high turnover, low traffic, inconsistency in job titles make it hard for search engines to classify the vacancy postings. Indian job-seekers will be now able to look for jobs across varied sectors and irrespective of levels—thus making online job hunting a breezy affair.
