Meet ‘RADA’: the robot that will check you in for your flights at Delhi airport

If you are heading to catch a flight at the Indira Gandhi International Airport’s Terminal 3, you might get a chance to meet RADA, an Artificial Intelligence-powered robot who will assist your inquiries and also entertain you.

Full-service carrier Vistara on Tuesday announced that RADA, will be deployed at the Delhi airport from July 5 in a public statement, to assist their customers before they board their flights. Founded in 2013, Vistara is a joint venture airline between Singapore Airlines and Tata Sons Limited, officially known as TATA SIA Airlines.

Here’s how it works

The robot has been equipped to scan boarding passes, offer real-time information and address queries pertaining to terminals, departure gates, flight status and weather conditions in your destination city. Besides checking you in and providing relevant information about your flight itinerary, RADA will also help promote Vistara’s products and services with the help of distinct messages recited by the bot.

Equipped with three cameras and four wheels it can also gesture with limited hand movements and navigate through the lounge along predefined pathways, thereby enabling it to interact with and greet the airline’s customers. It can play multimedia content like music videos and play games with children as well as adults.

Seamless and ‘intuitively thoughtful’ on-ground service

With RADA cutting-edge robotic technology has finally entered Indian airports and the future looks promising and enticing. According to Vistara’s Chief Executive Officer Leslie Thng, RADA is a highly effective assistant, due to its inbuilt cameras, cognitive recognition ability, 360-degree rotation and effective voice technology.

Thng added the robot will be upgraded with more state-of-the-art features based on customer feedback. “Our steadfast focus remains to be on delighting customers across all touchpoints, and we’re confident that ‘RADA’ will help us take the ‘new feeling’ to the next level,” she said in the announcement.

“With RADA, we aim to change the way people interact and fly with an airline,” Thng said in an interview with NDTV.

With the transformative nature of artificial intelligence, we can surely expect more RADAs to scale the lengths and breadths of our airports soon, perhaps even offering us beverages and manning luggage conveyors in the future.
