Da Dum: Netflix Drops Prices In India

Netflix’s mobile-only plan will now cost Indian subscribers INR 149 per month, compared to the earlier INR 199 per month.

The development is being widely seen as the streaming giant’s attempt to woo more subscribers in India, where the streaming market is hugely competitive.

For a while, Netflix remained the most expensive streaming service in the country and didn’t see the subscriber growth witnessed in the West, owing to India’s largely price-conscious consumer.

Lowdown On Netflix’s New Plans And Rates

At INR 149 for the mobile-only plan, you can now binge-watch your favorite shows on either a mobile or tablet, with 480p resolution. One cannot access Netflix on a bigger screen and the plan supports only one device at a time.

The Netflix Basic Plan will now cost INR 199 per month from the earlier INR 499 per month earlier, a significant reduction. This plan will also limit resolution to 480p, but you can access Netflix on a computer and TV as well, again only one device at a time.

The Standard Plan is now Rs 499 per month now, down from INR 649. You can now access 1080p resolution and this plan also supports two devices at the same time. Netflix can be accessed on mobile, TV, computers, and tablets with the Standard Plan.

The Premium Plan will now cost Rs 649 per month, from the earlier INR 799. The top-of-the-line subscription gives you 4K resolution, and the ability to access the app from your mobile, tablet, computer, and TV simultaneously.

New Rates And Existing Netflix Membership

The rates will change as on December 14, and will reflect in the next billing cycle for all Netflix subscribers. New members can choose the plans at the new prices.

For existing Netflix members on the Mobile, Basic and Standard plans, Netflix will automatically upgrade to the next higher plan, at the same price. So if you are a Netflix Mobile Plan user, you will get upgraded to the Basic Plan at INR 199 per month, for example.

Users will receive a notification on their device, where they can choose ‘Confirm Upgrade’ to use the plan or choose any other plan they wish. Overall, the prices have been reduced by 18-60 per cent across different plans.

Interestingly, Netflix’s rival Amazon has increased prices for its Amazon Prime service in India, which also gives users access to the Prime Video streaming service.

Amazon Prime will now cost INR 1499 annually in India, as compared to the earlier price of INR 999 per year.
