All of the BJP’s had five candidatesPraveen Darekar, Ram Shinde, Shrikant Bharatiya, Uma Khapre and Prasad Lad fielded in the Maharashtra Legislative Council Elections won their seats.
Of the two candidates fielded by the Congress Bhai Jagtap and Chandrakant Handore, only the former won while the NCP nominees Ramraje Nimbalkar and Eknath Khadse and the Shiv Sena nominees Aamshya Padavi and Sachin Ahir bagged seats in the MLC polls.
Members of the Maharashtra Assembly voted in the legislative Council elections at Vidhan Bhawan in Mumbai on Monday.
The Assembly consists of 288 members total, with 285 of them casting their ballot. The BJP has 106 MLAs and the Shiv Sena 55 and the NCP 51. While the Congress has 44 MLAs, and the rest have 29 MLAs.
Shiv Sena MLA Ramesh Latake, died last month while NCP MLAs, and former ministers, Anil Deshmukh and Nawab Malik were not allowed to vote, as they are in judicial custody over money laundering charges.
The BJP required 24 additional votes to get its five candidates elected while the Congress needed 8 for its two candidates.
The Shiv Sena had the full quota of 52 votes to ensure the victory of both of its candidates. The NCP was short of just one vote to take its tally to 52 votes and get both candidates elected.
Two ailing BJP MLAsLaxman Jagtap, who represents Pimpri-Chinchwad, and Mukta Tilak, who represents the Kasbapeth seat in Punewere brought by an ambulance. The Bahujan Vikad Aghadi had to summon one member, Kshitij Thakur, who was abroad, which was a decisive factor.
Mumbai Congress President Bhai Jagtap earlier said that the BJP’s win in the recently-concluded Rajya Sabha elections was an accident.
Ahead of the Maharashtra Legislative Council (MLC) elections, he also expressed confidence about winning both the state council seats. The Congress was able to claim one seat as Jagtap won.
