Asian Games 2018: Here?s everything you need to know about the competition held in Indonesia

By Elton Gomes

Asian Games 2018, simply known as Asiad, will be the 18th edition of the games. The games will commence from August 18 to September 2 in the Indonesian cities of Jakarta and Palembang. Around 10,000 athletes across 45 countries will take part in the event.

India will look to return with a lot of medals as their 572-strong contingent prepares for the games. Out of the 572 athletes from the Indian contingent, 312 men and 260 women will participate in 36 various sports. The athletes will be accompanied by a total of 232 coaches, support staff, and other officials. Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra will be the flag bearer for India at the opening ceremony.

Previously, India’s contingent size for the Games stood at 524. However, after several court orders and reshuffling to include or drop athletes due to selection controversies, the final number stood at 572. Of these 572, 49 members from the Indian contingent will have to bear their own travel costs.

Who didn’t make it?

Runners Prachi Choudhary and Chhavi Sharawat will not be competing in the games after losing their petition against the Athletics Federation of India (AFI). Both runners had a problem with the AFI’s selection policies and alleged that the federation changed rules to keep them out of the games.

On Thursday, veteran tennis player Leander Paes said that he will be withdrawing from the games as he did not get a “specialist” doubles partner. After Divij Sharan and Rohan Bopanna decided to play together, men’s team’s captain Zeeshan Ali was left with little choice but to let a young Sumit Nagal play alongside Paes. “It is with a heavy heart that I have to say that I will not be playing the upcoming Asian Games in Indonesia,” Paes said in a statement sent to PTI.

Whom to watch out for?

Day 1 of the games

On the first day of the Games, Olympic medallists PV Sindhu, Sushil Kumar, and others will be in action. The Indian women’s hockey team will kick off their campaign with a match against Indonesia. After hockey, the action will then shift to freestyle wrestling wherein Sandeep Tomar (57kg), Bajrang Punia (65kg), Pawan Kumar (86kg), and Mausam Khatri (97kg) will be in action on day one.

Top Indian athletes

Indian shooters have had a memorable year so far, and will look to continue their medal-winning streak. All eyes will be on Manu Bhaker, who has won gold in every competition she has participated in. Apart from Bhaker, a lot will be expected from Heena Sidhu, who became the first Indian pistol shooter to win a gold medal in an ISSF World Cup final. Another young shooter in the Indian contingent is Anish Bhanwala, who won a gold medal in the Commonwealth Games at the age of 15.

In the 65 kg freestyle wrestling category, Bajrang Punia could be a serious contender. Punia already has a hat-trick of golds (the Commonwealth Games in Australia, Yasar Dogu International in Turkey, and Tbilisi Grand Prix in Georgia) and will surely look to add to his medal count.

Hockey player Lalremsiami played a vital role in helping the Indian women’s team in reaching the quarter-finals of the Women’s Hockey World Cup in London. Her presence has been highly influential for the women’s team, and they will be counting on Lalremsiami’s penalty corner conversions to help them in the games.

Track and field athlete Neeraj Chopra has shown great promise in javelin throw. Chopra bagged gold at the Commonwealth Games in Australia and also holds the national record (87.43 m) in javelin throw. The games in Indonesia will be the first Asiad for Chopra, and his main opponent would be Taiwan’s Chen Chao-tsun, current holder of the Asian record (91.36 m).

Star wrestlers Sakshi Malik and Vinesh Phogat will also look to make an impact as they lead India’s women’s squad. Malik won bronze in the 2016 Olympic Games and will want to settle for nothing less than gold in the 62 kg category. Phogat will compete in the 50 kg division.

India also has hopes in boxer Vikas Krishan Yadav, who has won bronze and gold, respectively, in 2014 and 2010 editions of the games. Yadav will be up against some tough competition wherein boxers from Uzbekistan could prove to be formidable opponents.

Other athletes to look out for

China’s Sun Yang will look to create ripples in the sport of swimming. Sun has previously won three golds [400m and 1,500m freestyle, and 4x100m freestyle relay] and came in second in the 200 m, four years ago at Incheon. Badminton player Lin Dan will be participating in his fifth Asiad this year. Lin bagged a silver medal in Doha in 2006, but remained unbeatable in Guangzhou and Incheon. The veteran’s presence will be a significant boost to the Chinese team.

Indonesia’s hopes for a medal have been pinned on Lindswell Kwok. The 26-year-old Chinese-Indonesian is a five-time wushu world champion and has strong backing from Indonesia. “She is one of our best medal hopes and the whole country is behind her,” Jakarta-based journalist, Ade Alkausar, said about Kwok, as reported by the South China Morning Post.
