Advice for freelancers seeking to work from home

By Harrish Sairaman

Freelancers, entrepreneurs, startups are all not unfamiliar terms anymore. Millennials do not hesitate to climb mountains of risks anymore and work from home culture has garnered much-needed respect in society. With changing mindsets, culture, economy and a lot more have changed, and every door of opportunity holds new possibilities within.

Increasing traffic, travel time, hectic work schedules, minimum wages and a plethora of other reasons have made working from home the preferred choice of work mode for the millennials. It no longer is just a ‘part-time’ job. However, there are certain challenges that need to be addressed and certain traits and qualities that need to be demonstrated if one wants to be a success in this whirlpool of freelancing opportunities.

Validating your idea

The very first step while you’re deciding to be a freelancer is to validate your idea of freelancing. Freelancing is like a Pandora’s Box, it may include some things which you desire for and some which you do not. Firstly, you need to study and analyze the amount of dedication and time your job would require. To be successful in Freelancing, you need to dedicatedly work on your idea for over two years without expecting much in return and once you are able to surpass this the possiblities are endless.

Shift in mentality

You will need to have a mentality which is different from the masses. Freelancing is a serious business and it has the potential to expand, make huge profits and also contribute to a great extent towards the development of the nation. You need to believe so in order to create the right foundation for the upliftment of your creative talents as well as your business. Additionally, ensure you are convinced that your product or service has the potential to bring in a shift in the market. Ultimately, customer experience will matter and their feedback and reference will help you scale up.

Bringing in a great ambience

One of the greatest challenges is to bring in the right ambience at home. A casual set up and ambience can have an impact on your productivity and the work you produce. If possible ensure you have a dedicated place for work and that you follow a strict timetable. Also, ensure your work does not spill over into family time or else the work-life balance gets affected severely. Being conscious of the time and intent can bring in success in personal and professional life.

Learning as a continuous attitude

Millennials who choose their own way of working must also realize that learning must never stop. Whether it is work from home or work from an office to become a champion you must continuously learn to get trained, take some risks and get regularly coached and mentored. Setting personal goals which include reading, learning new skills and mastering your present art can open a new array of opportunities thus, contributing towards your career and in turn towards the economy.
