Actor Siddharth clarifies ‘derogatory? Saina Nehwal tweet, as NCW demands action

Actor Siddharth issued a clarification saying ‘nothing disrespectful was insinuated’ in his tweet mentioning Saina Nehwal.

Siddharth had earlier tweeted in response to Nehwal’s tweet, where Nehwal raised concerns over PM Modi’s security breach in Punjab.

‘No nation can claim itself to be safe if the security of its own PM gets compromised. I condemn, in the strongest words possible, the cowardly attack on PM Modi by anarchists,’ Nehwal, an Olympic Bronze medallist, had tweeted.

Siddharth responded by calling Saina the ‘subtle cock champion.’ Quoting Nehwal’s tweet, Siddharth replied ‘subtle cock champion of the world.’

The tweet met with widespread criticism even as National Commission for Women chair Rekha Sharma took up the matter with the Maharashtra Police, asking for Twitter to take action against the actor’s account.

Siddharth claimed Monday that he had intended to refer to the idiom ‘cock-and-bull story.’

‘COCK & BULL’ That’s the reference,’ the actor tweeted, adding, ‘Nothing disrespectful was intended’

However, many, including Saina’s husband and fellow badminton player Parupalli Kashyap, were not convinced with the clarification.

Siddharth is known for his work in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi films such as Rang De Basanti (2006).
