Stock Markets: Samvat 2078 and Diwali Muhurat Trading 2021

The stock markets will open for one hour special Muhurat Trading session on Diwali, November 4, to mark the beginning of Samvat 2078, the Hindu New Year.

The Muhurat trading is practised to commemorate the start of the new Samvat 2078. That is when the traditional business community open their books of account.

History of Muhurat trading sessions

BSE and NSE have been holding the special Muhurat trading sessions since 1957 and 1992 respectively. Traditionally, stock brokers opened new settlement accounts for their clients on the day of Diwali.

This special session is meant to give a window to investors to make trades on the auspicious day of Diwali.

This year, the Muhurat trading session will begin at 6:15 pm and end at 7:15 pm on Thursday, November 4.

Muhurat Trading Last Year

Last year, domestic stock markets made a strong start to Samvat 2077 with benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty closing at record highs in the special, one-hour trading session on Diwali to mark the beginning of Samvat 2077.

In Samvat 2077, the Sensex and Nifty gave phenomenal returns to investors by surging 40 per cent to record highs on the back of strong global liquidity, containment of COVID-19 cases, significant pickup in vaccination and sharp recovery in corporate earnings.

Meanwhile, the broader markets outperformed benchmark indices as Midcap and Smallcap indices jumped more than 70 per cent.

Market Schedule On Diwali’s Muhurat Trading Session 2021:

  • Pre Open: 6:00 PM-6:15 PM
  • Normal Market: 6:15 PM-7:15 PM
  • Closing Session: 7:25 PM-7:35 PM
  • F&O, Currency (CDS), MCX: 6:15 PM-7:15 PM

With the economic cycle picking up and stock markets hitting record highs, corporate earnings growth are expected to revive as well, after the pandemic slump.

Markets have always moved in tandem with earnings growth. Although there would be ups and downs in-between, experts expect market trends to remain positive in Samvat 2078 too.
