Russia claims responsibility for Kremenchuk mall strike

A Russian missile strike hit a crowded shopping centre in the Ukrainian city of Kremenchuk on Monday, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said.

An estimated 1,000 people are said to have been inside the building at the time of the attack.

Ukraine’s State Emergency Service said at least 18 people were confirmed killed and 59 were injured. Another 36 remain missing.

Meanwhile, leaders from the G7 nations meet in Germany, where possible further actions against Russia are expected to be discussed.

Firefighters and soldiers searched for survivors as they sifted through the rubble of the shopping mall. Kremenchuk, an industrial city of 217,000, lies on the Dnipro River in the region of Poltava and is the site of Ukraine’s biggest oil refinery.
