Punjabi Singer Daler Mehndi Sentenced To Jail For 2 Years

Popular Punjabi singer Daler Mehndi was sentenced to two years in jail by a Patiala court in a 2003 human trafficking case.

Pronouncing the judgment, Patiala Additional Sessions judge HS Grewal ordered the immediate arrest of Mr. Mehndi. He was immediately taken into custody by the Punjab Police.

Mr. Mehndi, along with his brother Shamsher Singh, was accused of taking people abroad by allegedly taking money to illegally send people abroad, concealing them as ‘troupe’ members.

The brothers allegedly took two troupes to the US in 1998 and 1999, where 10 people were shown as group members to help them travel to other countries. As per the reports, 35 complaints came up against Mr. Mehndi and his brother and a case was subsequently registered.

Both were charged under IPC’s sections for human trafficking and conspiracy, besides the Indian Passport Act and were awarded two-year jail terms in 2018. They were subsequently released on bail and filed appeals.

The appeals were now dismissed by the court, the lawyer for the complainant said.
