Prime Minister Narendra Modi?s mother Heeraben Modi passes away in Ahmedabad

‘A glorious century rests at the feet of God,’ PM Modi tweeted on Friday morning, as his mother Heeraben Modi passed away at the age of 00, after earlier being admitted to the UN Mehta Institute of Cardiology and Research Centre in Ahmedabad on Wednesday following the deterioration of her health.

Heeraben’s life and sacrifices had ‘shaped’ his mind, personality and self-confidence, PM Modi had written on his blog on 18 June, her 99th birthday.

‘My Mother is as simple as she is extraordinary. Just like all mothers,’ he wrote.

PM Modi was last seen with his mother in public on 4 December, when he visited her house during the assembly election in Gujarat.

Heeraben was born in Visnagar in Gujarat’s Mehsana district in 1923.

Heeraben never attended public programmes, PM Modi wrote, adding that she had only accompanied him to two events, when he first took oath as the chief minister of Gujarat.

Heeraben is also known to have visited him in Delhi only two years later after he became the nation’s most powerful person in 2014.

PM Modi paid floral tribute to his mother at her residence before carrying her mortal remains for the last rites to a crematorium.

PM Modi’s brother Somabhai Modi and other family members also arrived at the residence of Heeraben Modi.

‘On behalf of the people of West Bengal, I thank you so much for giving us this opportunity. It’s a sad day for you. Your mother means our mother also. May god give you the strength to continue your work, please take some rest’ West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee said offering her condolences.

After the funeral, PM Modi attended events that had been scheduled in West Bengal state through video conferencing.

‘Please take some rest’ Mamata Banerjee suggested to PM Modi as he flagged off the Vande Bharat Express on the Howrah-Siliguri route in West Bengal virtually, after performing his mother’s last rites
