Nirav Modi To Be Extradited?

A UK court on Thursday allowed the extradition of jeweler Nirav Modi to India to stand trial for fraud and money laundering in the estimated USD 2 billion PNB scam case.

Mr. Modi can be extradited to India, the court observed, citing that there is “no evidence that if extradited Nirav Modi will not get justice.”

Mr. Modi lost his legal battle against extradition on all other grounds as well. District Judge Samuel Goozee seemed to be satisfied with the Indian government’s assurances, as he also observed the defendant’s human rights concerns that his medical needs would not be addressed were unfounded.

Mr. Modi appeared via videolink in south-west London, where he is held at the Wandsworth Prison. He is reported to have been emotionless when his judgment was read out in court.

The ruling will now be sent to the UK Home Secretary for sign-off.
