Charting a Path for Maritime Security
The Indian Ocean, often referred to as the “lifeblood of humanity,” plays a pivotal role in global commerce and geopolitics. Ensuring maritime security is not only essential for economic stability but also for maintaining geopolitical equilibrium. Recognizing this imperative, the Information Fusion Centre Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR) was inaugurated on December 22, 2018, with the mission of enhancing maritime safety and security in the region. IFC-IOR, under Captain Rohit Bajpai’s leadership, serves as a unique hub where International Liaison Officers (ILOs) from partner nations collaborate to address maritime challenges. ILOs from twelve countries are appointed to the Centre, facilitating cooperation with 42 other maritime security constructs and 25 partner countries to ensure a peaceful and prosperous Indian Ocean Region.
Sailing Ahead with MISW
As part of India’s vision of ‘Security And Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR),’ IFC-IOR conducts various workshops and training programs, with the Maritime Information Sharing Workshop (MISW) being the flagship event. Since its inception in 2019, MISW has provided a dynamic platform for professionals in the maritime security domain to exchange best practices. It fosters camaraderie and coordination in response to multifaceted threats to maritime safety and security, such as piracy, armed robbery, smuggling, and illegal migration, which have global ramifications.
Plotting the Course for MISW 23
MISW 23, taking place from September 14 to 16, 2023, represents a significant step in strengthening engagement with partner nations and regional constructs. Under the theme “Advancing Maritime Security for a Sustainable Future,” the workshop unites delegates from 31 countries, including the International Maritime Organization (IMO). It aims to enhance collaboration, cooperation, and information sharing among participating countries for a safer, more peaceful, prosperous Indian Ocean Region. The event was inaugurated by VAdm Sanjay Mahindru, Deputy Chief of Naval Staff, Indian Navy, setting the stage for three days of intensive discussions and knowledge exchange. MISW 23 is exclusively planned for members of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) and the Djibouti Code of Conduct/ Jeddah Amendment (DCoC/JA) countries.
Exploring the Workshop’s Depths
During the workshop, notable speakers will lead participants in thematic training sessions on day one, covering topics such as transnational maritime security challenges in the IOR, the necessity of international cooperation and information sharing to address maritime threats, the importance of technology and innovation in maritime security (MARSEC), and aligning national efforts to create a resilient Maritime Security Architecture. The second day will focus on a scenario-based maritime security exercise, emphasizing the value of collaboration and information sharing. Participants will also prepare contingency plans to counter maritime security and safety threats. On the third day, a dedicated workshop will be conducted exclusively for DCoC/JA countries to refine Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for their Information Sharing Network (ISN).
MISW 23 promises to be a crucial event in the ongoing effort to ensure the security and prosperity of the Indian Ocean Region, bringing together nations and experts committed to safeguarding the world’s vital maritime routes.
