Jayalalithaa?s death raises suspicions on her nearest acquaintances

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) President M.K. Stalin has asked the Centre to order a CBI inquiry into former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa’s death on Sunday. This happened following the statement made by the Forest Minister, C. Srinivasan.  He said that all the AIADMK leaders had lied about Jayalalithaa’s health before she died in December 2016.

Stalin said that the responsibility was now on the Centre to “unravel the mystery” surrounding her death since they assisted in her treatment. The Centre had assisted by sending AIIMS doctors to watch over Jayalalithaa’s treatment. The Union Health Minister, J.P. Nadda also made a statement that the Centre was watching over her health. Citing this, he demanded that the Centre order for a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation.

The surfacing of sinister allegations?

Last week, Srinivasan alleged that V.K. Sasikala, Jayalalithaa’s closest confidante, and her family were responsible for her death. Sasikala was recently ousted as the party’s secretary general and is currently serving a jail term due to a disproportionate assets case. He said that the AIADMK leaders’ fear of Sasikala led them to misinform the public that Jayalalithaa’s health was improving.

He stated that no one had visited or seen her “eating idlis or drinking tea or chatting.” They had all been forced to lie because they were afraid of Sasikala at that time. He also hinted at the fact that Jayalalithaa and Sasikala’s relationship was anything but rosy, contrary to what they made it seem. Since the party leaders also wanted to conceal these problems from the outside world, they sealed their lips. When Jayalalithaa had been admitted to Apollo Hospital in Chennai on September 2016, no one among the AIADMK leaders, members or the governor himself had met her. This led to another concern raised by Stalin. How did Jayalalithaa advise the transfer of her portfolios to O. Paneerselvam, who was then made in charge?

Inquiry set up for justice

On Monday, 25th September, the Tamil Nadu government set up an inquiry commission to probe the death of Jayalalithaa. It is said to be headed by retired Madras High Court judge justice, A. Arumughaswamy. Stalin, President of Tamil Nadu’s largest opposition party, also questioned the veracity of Jayalalithaa’s thumb impression. It was used in the election-related documents of AIADMK candidates for the by-elections to Aravakurichi, Thanjavur and Thiruparankundram assembly constituencies last year.
