Team Indias white-ball setup is allegedly set to undergo a paradigm shift as rumours abound that current captain Virat Kohli is likely to step down as the white-ball captain after the T20 World Cup to be held in the UAE/Oman in October-November.
If indeed true, this development will likely result in fellow senior and white-ball legend Rohit Sharma to take up the top job, as Kohli focuses his efforts on India’s Test Cricket dominance and his personal ambitions of remaining the world’s best batsman.
Kohli (32), who currently leads the team across all formats and is Indias most successful captain ever, is thought have taken the call to go for a split-captaincy with Sharma.
After discussions with the team management and Sharma over the last few months, particularly after Team Indias triumph in Australia, Kohli is said to have wanted to focus on his batting, across formats, as Team India heads into the T20 and ODI World Cups.
Sharma, meanwhile, is in the form of his life across formats and his T20 captaincy records, having won five IPL titles for the Mumbai Indians, speak for themselves. The captaincy has always been a subject of great debate, with many fans of the opinion he should have taken over from Kohli long back.
That just might be a possibility now.
