INS Visakhapatnam Thwarts Drone Attack on MV Genco Picardy in the Gulf of Aden

In a swift and decisive response, the Indian Navy’s guided-missile destroyer, INS Visakhapatnam, on a mission to combat piracy in the Gulf of Aden, successfully intercepted and neutralized a drone attack on the Marshall Island flagged MV Genco Picardy. The incident unfolded on the night of January 17, 2024, at 2311 hrs.

Upon receiving a distress call from MV Genco Picardy, INS Visakhapatnam immediately altered its course and reached the scene at 0030 hrs on January 18, 2024. The Marshall Island flagged vessel, carrying 22 crew members, including 9 Indians, reported no casualties and confirmed that the fire resulting from the drone attack was under control.

Indian Naval Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) specialists from INS Visakhapatnam boarded MV Genco Picardy in the early hours of January 18, 2024, to thoroughly inspect the damaged area. The EOD specialists declared the area safe for further transit after meticulous examination and prompt action.

The successful neutralization of the drone attack and the subsequent rendering of the vessel safe for transit underscore the Indian Navy’s commitment to maritime security in the region.
