Global Celebrities Tweet, As Farmer Protests Trend

Pop singer Rihanna Tuesday tweeted about the ongoing farmers’ protest at Delhi’s borders, thereby bringing global ‘celebrity’ attention to the issue online.

“Why aren’t we talking about this?! #FarmersProtest,” tweeted the popstar with who has over 100 million followers on Twitter.

Soon after, many well known names globally lent their voices to the farmer protests online, including the likes of climate change activist Greta Thunberg, American lawyer and Vice President Kamala Harris’ niece Meena Harris, and the Human Rights Watch.

Closer home, there were voices on the other side of the debate, with actor Kangana Ranaut responding to the initial tweet by Rihanna.

“No one is talking about it because they are not farmers, they are terrorists who are trying to divide India, so that China can take over our vulnerable broken nation and make it a Chinese colony much like USA,” she tweeted. Many other Bollywood stars such as Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty and Karan Johar have entered the debate on Twitter, lamenting the violence seen in the protests and urging for calm.
