Will Tamil Nadu bow down, or will Sasikala bow out?

By Anirudh Singla

Tamil Nadu seethes in Political turmoil as AIADMK General Secretary V.K. Sasikala (popularly known as Chinamma) attempts to take over the chief ministerial seat in Chennai. Questions and suspicions had arisen the day she ascended the dais to accept the post of General Secretary of the popular party AIADMK. Known to have been a calculative player, many people were left bewildered over her falling pawns, as the chessboard stumbled in lieu to its incapability over handling her fast progressive moves.

The current situation resembles a lot to the fateful dilemma of Arjun during the final war with the Kauravas in Mahabharata, the popular Sanskrit epic.

With the populace of Tamil Nadu portraying themselves in the capacity of Arjun, whose moral righteousness creates disbeliefs causing inability in his action. They find their thoughts in contention, as to fight Chinamma’s coronation or not.

Political speculation is centering its focus on the delay in the swearing-in ceremony by the governor, while a disputatious show of power over MLAs’ support ensues between Chinamma and O Paneerselvam.

Tamil Nadu: Hanging gardens of power ascension

What should ideally be concerning us as individuals is not the question of why O Paneerselvam should continue as the Chief Minister but, more of pressing value that, why Sasikala Natarajan should not be given absolute power. Conferring her the right to take decisions on behalf of the people is like peeking a hand at the eye of a cyclone. Only to receive back a dismangled point of opinion that would only lead to swerving policy changes covered by cobwebs of corruption.

[su_pullquote]Having distanced herself from Sasikala earlier and then accepting the sowed seeds of forgiveness from Chinamma, Jayalalithaa had with extreme caution taken another chance to trust her, post her corrupt involvements[/su_pullquote]

Having distanced herself from Sasikala earlier and then accepting the sowed seeds of forgiveness from Chinamma, Jayalalithaa had with extreme caution taken another chance to trust her, post her corrupt involvements. During Jayalalithaa’s last days, ensuring restricted access to her by Sasikala primarily further escalated mistrust and inconspicuousness. Further discomposure among the party cadres and people elicited after Jaya’s sudden death post announcements that pertained to her signs of recovery. Taking cognizance of these happenings, it’s not strange to question the mistrust of populace and party members, in Sasikala.

O Paneerselvam defends his stance

Recently, Current Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O Paneerselvam put forward the contents of a letter to the media, wherein Sasikala has expressed her “heartfelt” stance towards the situation that arose in Poes Garden back in 2012. The contents explicitly state that she had no ambitions either in the party or the government and had seemingly decided to break all contacts from her family members who have scandalously corrupt charges against them. The contents are as follows for the readers to opine on; “Not even in my wildest dreams, I have thought of betraying ‘akka’. For 24 years, I have been living under the same roof. I have no ambitions either in the party or in the government. I have always devoted my life to ‘akka’ and the rest of my life will be to serve her,” she wrote:

[su_quote cite=”Sasikala”]”Only after coming out of Poes Garden, I became aware of the machinations of my relatives who have misused my proximity and brought disrepute to akka and the party. I have no role whatsoever in that.” [/su_quote]

Repeated attacks to defile all efforts of the O Paneerselvam’s government were brought into place by rolling into motion the sacking of O Paneerselvam as the AIADMK treasurer in response to his revolt against Sasikala. History has taught us that when a leader decides to snatch power than to strive for it, things have always gone down the spiral. These are dark times for Tamil Nadu. What is to be seen is, can the inevitable swearing-in of Sasikala be withheld by any plausible means.
