Did China Mock India’s COVID Crisis?

Chinese President Xi Jinping recently conveyed his condolences to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for thr tragic situation unfolding in the country, particularly the mass deaths in the nation’s capital owing to oxygen supply shortages.

However, in an unfortunate turn of events, a social media post by the Commission for Political and Legal Affairs (CPLA), a top decisions making body within the Communist Party of China (CPC) is said to have mocked the Covid-19 humanitarian crisis, insensitively comparing the lighting of funeral pyres at an Indian crematorium with the launch of a Chinese rocket last week.

The CPC’s central committee allegedly had published two images on the Chinese networking platform Weibo on Saturday, showing the Chinese rocket launch alongside the lighting of a pyre in India, in a distasteful display of apathy.

The caption is said to have read along the lines of “When China sets things on fire vs. when India does it”.

The post has since been taken off after objections were raised.
