Commonwealth Games 2018: India adds to medal tally with wins in shooting and para-sports

India continued to win medals on the sixth day of the Commonwealth Games. Indian shooter Heena Sidhu broke the Games’ records and won a gold medal in the women’s 25-metre pistol event. Sidhu scored a total of 38 points in the final, and retained her composure to defeat Australia’s Elena Galiabovitch.

Adding to India’s medal tally was para-powerlifter Sachin Chaudhary. He won bronze in the men’s heavyweight finals, bagging India’s first medal in para-sports.

The Indian powerlifter came in third after lifting 181 kg. Nigeria’s Abdulazeez Ibrahim came in first place after lifting 191.9 kg, whereas Malaysia’s Yee Khie Jong bagged silver by lifting 188.7 kg.

India now stands third at the games, after adding their eleventh gold medal. Host Australia still tops the medal tally with 126 medals overall, and 48 gold medals. England is in second place, with 24 golds and 73 overall medals.

Indian boxer Amit Panghal has ensured yet another medal for India after defeating Aqeel Ahmed of Scotland 4:1 in the quarter-finals.

In hockey, the Indian women’s team eliminated South Africa by defeating them 1-0. The team entered the semi-finals after captain Rani Rampal scored the only goal in the match.

Emulating the women’s hockey team, the men’s hockey team also made it to the semi-finals after defeating Malaysia 2-1. Both goals for India came via Harmanpreet Singh.

Eighteen-year-old Hima Das qualified for the women’s 400 metres finals after producing her personal best of 51.53 seconds.

Day 7 of the Games

India’s athletes will be participating in as many as 10 sports on the seventh day of the Commonwealth Games.

Shooters Jitu Rai and Om Mitherval will be looking to add to India’s medal tally in the men’s 50-metre pistol event. However, the highlight of day 7 of the games is expected be MC Mary Kom’s semi-final duel with Sri Lanka’s Anusha Koddithuwakku.

Individual events in badminton and table tennis will see Kidambi Srikanth takes on Mauritian Aatish Lubah in badminton in the men’s singles. HS Prannoy will be up against Christopher Jean Paul from Mauritius.

Manika Batra and Mouma Das will also be in action in women’s singles. Meanwhile, the Indian men’s hockey team will face England in an attempt to finish top of their pool.
