A Digital Uttar Pradesh will make a Digital India??

By The Indian Economist

In the digital world that we live in, digitization is constantly being embraced as an inevitable development. The importance of digitization is significantly understated, and its broad scope given much less attention than it deserves. The process of digitization has begun to expand not only in the sectors of education, health and businesses, but also to governance in the public sector.

To realize the dream of digitization, it is necessary for the public, especially young students, who are the future builders of the nation, to be equipped with the basic tools that enable a digital life. This further necessitates easy access to computers.

The Uttar Pradesh Government has launched a free laptop distribution scheme for the students of the state who have passed Class XII; a welcome step in this direction. About 1.5 million laptops were distributed under this scheme to the students, in the world’s largest programme of its kind.

The beneficiaries included students passing high school and intermediate examination conducted by Uttar Pradesh Secondary Education Board, Poorva Madhyama and Madhyama of Sanskrit Education Board, Munshi/Maulvi and Alim of Madrasa Board. CBSE, ICSE and ISC, besides students of recognized ITI and polytechnics where minimum eligibility for admission is high school or equivalent, are also eligible for the benefit.

It is heartening for one to see that the biggest state of India, in terms of population, has taken the lead. “Often it is said that India is the biggest market. Similarly, UP was the biggest market in the country, therefore it should not be overlooked at any level,” said Akhilesh Yadav, the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister. On a national level, such a step may not create a dent in the scenario of overall development for the youth. But, a series of such steps taken across the country can surely create significant impact in lives of thousands of young people, by unlocking access to a plethora of opportunities.
