India chased down a modest target of 69 run to win the inaugural Women’s U19 T20 World Cup title, after England were bowled out for 68.
India lost both openers, Captain Shafali Verma and leading run-scorer Shweta Sehrawat early in their chase against England Women, but Soumya Tiwari and Gongadi Trisha kept the score moving. In the end, it was Tiwari who hit the winning runs to trigger euphoria among the Indian camp.
Earlier, Titas Sadhu, Archana Devi and Parshavi Chopra grabbed 2 wickets each, while Mannat Kashyap, Shafali Verma and Soman Yadav picked one each to dismiss England for a low total.
Only 4 England batters could enter double digits with Rayana Macdonald-Gay top scoring with 19. India headed into the finals after a thumping victory over New Zealand, whom they defeated by eight wickets. England, on the other hand, defeated Australia in a low-scoring encounter.
‘The way all the girls are performing and backing each other, so happy. Incredible feeling. Thanks to the staff, the way they have been backing us everyday and telling us that we are here for the cup and because of them we are here. All thanks to them. The players have been backing me a lot. Thanks to BCCI for giving me this beautiful team and really happy for winning the cup. She (Shweta Sehrawat) has been excellent and has followed all the plans from the staff. Not just her, Archana, Soumya and I can’t really take the names but they all have been incredible.’ Varma said.
