“Model United Nations, also known as Model UN or MUN, is an educational simulation and/or academic activity in which students can learn about diplomacy, international relations, and the United Nations…” Oh, wait, wait. That’s just the Wikipedia definition, and not really helpful towards attracting anyone towards this amazing event, right? Allow us to reform that.
A platform to speak out
The Model United Nations, as its name suggests, aims at providing a platform for college and school students to meet up and step into the roles of representatives of various countries and look out for its interests, just as a real ambassador would. This is where they can exercise their understanding of the worldview and logical faculties to come out at the top of the game. If you like speaking and have an audience listen to you, this is your playground. The immediate or obvious benefits that a MUN-er gains include improved debating skills, the chance to build up their personality, the confidence to rise up in front of others and making their own point, an immaculate ability to research their own topic and carefully shredding down the arguments of others and also the value of teamwork, but that simply doesn’t cover the whole experience this event provides.
Indulge in extensive socialising
If you ask anyone who has been to an MUN, they would describe that how time flitters away like a dream during those two or three days. After the rules are set up, you start debating and the rush you get puts you into a sublime daze—you think in directions you’ve never thought before and discover confidence you never would’ve believed you had. The chits fly by, points and counter-points are raised, blocks are formed and before you know it, it’s time for the committee to adjourn and you to start calculating your strategy for the next day. However, the magic doesn’t end there. The lunch-and even un-moderated caucuses are the times when you can talk with interesting people from all over the place and if you have taken up accommodation in that college itself, you can always relieve the stress of preparation by going out and meeting someone new. Your cultures might clash, you might get severely offended by some practices, but you will bond. This is the place where you will realize that you do fit in and the fact that logic and intelligent conversations attract you more than the trending plot-less movie is not so weird after all.
IIT Bhubaneswar is raising the bar
The MUN is the king of debating events, and no, there are no debates about this statement. Just the ability to organise an MUN shows a college in a different light, and the MUN of IIT Bhubaneswar shines bright like Sirius in this field. Despite being only two years old, it has already grabbed the attention of an overwhelming majority of the student contingent and is one of the most prominent MUNs in eastern India. The people have had nothing but good things to say about it, and if you check out our Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/iitbbsrmun/ ) you could get pretty easily convinced yourself. Right from choosing the relevant topics and inviting the brightest minds in this field to act as the judges to flawless organisation-we have it all. In case you still have doubts about the grandeur of the event, feel free to contact Pranjal Bangani (7019136477). You know what they say…”MUN is where they have all the fun.”
