What trends and strategies will define the iGaming market in APAC?

In the Asia-Pacific region, iGaming is witnessing unprecedented growth, and analysts predict that by 2025, this market will become a major stage for global transformations in digital gambling. In just the next few years, industry revenues will multiply, and the number of engaged users will approach record highs. Why are APAC countries drawing such significant attention from operators and startups? What opportunities and challenges await market players in the coming year—and which technologies are driving the pace of change?

iGaming in Asia: scale, drivers, forecasts

Experts call Asia the “vanguard of iGaming.” According to reports from Statista and H2 Gambling Capital, by 2027, the online betting sector alone in APAC could exceed $94 billion, with market growth rates among the highest in the world. The strongest boost comes from the expanding penetration of smartphones, widespread adoption of 5G, and cultural shifts in the consumption of digital entertainment.

By 2025, the region is expected to have over 2.8 billion smartphone users (according to GSMA), making APAC the largest mobile market on the planet. Internet access is becoming more affordable, and mobile platforms are the primary channel for engagement in online games, lotteries, and betting. The relevant question is: what lies behind these impressive figures, and what determines the sustainability of growth?

Key segments: from live casinos to sports betting

Among the leading directions are live casinos with real dealers, sports betting (especially on cricket, football, horse racing), as well as online lotteries and bingo. Sports betting has become relevant for almost all major gambling operators: Melbet, Parimatch, and especially 1win. Our authors decided to check this and register or login here to see all the betting opportunities at 1win. It turned out that, in addition to thousands of gambling entertainments, there is also a fairly wide range of bookmaker functionality.

The live casino format is popular due to the sense of presence and interactivity: roulette, blackjack, and themed Asian games (for example, Sic Bo in China, Pachinko in Japan) are displacing classic slot machines.

According to representatives of Evolution Gaming, the growing interest in formats like Dream Catcher (interactive game shows) is driven by the desire to gain a unique experience and communicate with other players live. Adaptation to local traditions is noticeable: in India, for example, cricket and kabaddi betting are at the height of their popularity, while in Japan, lottery and horse racing bets are most popular.

The social aspect is becoming the heart of user engagement: live streams, chat with dealers and other participants, and collective betting opportunities create genuine player communities. Providers are actively adapting their offerings: localization of interfaces, introduction of traditional formats, and special offers for individual countries.

Technologies that are changing the market

Mobile applications and the availability of 5G have already radically changed the approach to iGaming. According to GSMA, 75% of online gambling turnover in 2024 comes from mobile channels. Instant access to betting has become the norm: sports and casino fans place bets on the go, at any time, and from any device.

The rapid growth of video streaming is supported by the development of Content Delivery Networks (CDN), which ensure stable and fast video playback, similar to how YouTube or Netflix optimize content delivery for millions of viewers. Reliable infrastructure is critical here, as even a split-second delay can cost an operator a customer.

Social platforms and messengers enhance engagement: discussions, instant reactions, viewing highlights via hashtags, and participating in interactive polls during streams have become part of the experience. Advanced solutions like Dolby OptiView offer low latency, adaptive video quality, and cross-platform compatibility. This allows operators to minimize technical failures, reduce user drop-off, and retain users even with unstable connections.

Among alternative technologies, solutions based on WebRTC and cloud video services stand out, but experts note that high peak loads and uneven internet channels in APAC remain the main challenges for the industry.

Regulatory landscape and legal context

The rules for operating in iGaming remain heterogeneous: each country in the region has its own approach to gambling. In India, for example, traditional sports betting is prohibited by federal law (Public Gambling Act 1867), but online betting remains in a “grey area”—some platforms operate without a direct ban, and individual states like Goa and Sikkim issue licenses.

In Japan, state lotteries and horse racing bets are popular, but online casinos are still illegal. The Philippines has a strict licensing system through PAGCOR, making the country one of the hubs for online gambling operators in Southeast Asia.

As PwC auditors note, regulatory fragmentation creates risks for investors but also stimulates the development of innovative business models and local partnerships. Legislative reforms in a number of countries could fundamentally change the market landscape in the coming years.

Cases and trends—which games and formats are popular

Social streaming is a phenomenon combining interactive video content, chats, and collaborative play. An example is the growing popularity of platforms where players discuss bets and share emotions during broadcasts. Operators are introducing multiview (simultaneous viewing of several matches), personalized recommendations, and unique betting options.

Cricket is the undisputed leader in engagement in India, Australia, and Pakistan. According to BARC estimates, the audience of the Indian Premier League (IPL) exceeds 400 million viewers. In Australia, the Melbourne Cup is considered a national event, and in Japan, traditional lotteries and tickets such as “Takarakuji” unite millions of buyers.

Youth is becoming a key driver of the market: more than 60% of surveyed young people (Ipsos/YouGov) consider online gambling an acceptable form of entertainment. Interactivity and gamification (chats, bonus missions, creative types of bets) contribute to the engagement of new generations.

Prospects and outstanding questions for the industry

Experts agree: new technologies, artificial intelligence, and flexible legislation can radically change the APAC market in the coming years. The key factors will be the speed of innovation adoption, the fight for service quality, and user loyalty.

Outstanding questions remain regarding the regulation of online betting, the integration of local traditions, and the search for a balance between risks and development. The iGaming industry in the Asia-Pacific region is only beginning its major transformations—and 2025 promises to become a turning point for new strategies and formats.

It is worth noting that the Asian video game market is also thriving. This is evident not only in the success of Asian esports, but also in the AAA hits of recent years. Clearly, Asian game development has a lot to offer the world—and the world is showing great interest in it.”
