Getting to grips with QA duties is easier if you have software tools to help out. And in an age where automation is taking over in every sphere of business, it makes sense that it would also be present here as well.

The question, then, is whether test automation is all it’s cracked up to be, or whether there are some downsides to moving away from the manual approach that need to be taken onboard?

Technical obstacles are eliminated

One excellent feature of modern testing software which integrates automation abilities is that it can be used to implement comprehensive, complex testing methodologies without the need for those building or running the tests to be coding experts themselves.

With the help of these tools, codeless automation testing is a breeze. So if you have struggled to attain your testing goals because you are hampered by a lack of programming proficiency in your QA team, this barrier is entirely removed with the right software to hand.

Extra steps are required

Test automation is not a ‘set and forget’ solution, but rather one which still needs to be carefully created and overseen by people with the skills and experience needed to fulfill its potential.

This is worth noting simply because it may require that you rejig your current QA workflows in order to accommodate it. And in spite of the discussion of the accessibility that codeless testing solutions offer, you may need to push beyond this if you are in need of a particularly tailored experience.

Speed is of the essence

Automated software is far better at carrying out repetitive testing tasks than any manual equivalent, so if you have a tight turnaround for testing, this is really the way to go.

It also means that even if you do not have the human resources to spare for testing purposes, you can still run through rigorous tests in large volumes. So even if some unexpected disruption occurs, test automation should help you weather the storm without causing entire projects to capsize at a crucial moment.

Costs are involved

As you might expect, embracing test automation solutions comes with a price to pay, and this might cause some companies to think twice before pulling the trigger.

However, any expense that is brought about by procuring the automation software and training team members in its use has to be balanced against the potential savings you will make over time. If testing can be both simplified and accelerated, then the improvements in productivity will easily justify the costs.

Accuracy is enhanced

Manual testing is prone to imperfections and errors, as the human element is far more fallible than any machine. With test automation solutions, you get not only endless repeatability, but reliable accuracy of both input and the recording of outcomes.

This ties into the analytical advantages of automated testing. You will have access to reams of data on each and every test cycle, so when issues arise you will be able to pinpoint, track and troubleshoot them with precision, rather than needing to go by gut feeling or guesswork.

Wrapping up

When all the pros and cons are taken into account, it is hard to argue that test automation is anything other than a gift for QA operations.

The speed and reliability are attractive, and of course as human employees will be relieved of daunting manual duties, they can get on with the other responsibilities of their roles while still overseeing in-depth testing of products prior to launch. This means it is a win-win for all involved.
