Sayan Chatterjee, New Delhi, 15th of September,2024: In a remarkable celebration of maritime tradition and gender equality, two Indian Navy officers, Lt Cdr Roopa A and Lt Cdr Dilna K, are poised to embark on the extraordinary sailing expedition Navika Sagar Parikrama II. Aboard the INSV Tarini, the duo will circumnavigate the globe, continuing the Navy’s legacy of oceanic exploration.
The officers have spent the past three years preparing for this challenging journey, demanding exceptional seamanship, physical endurance, and mental fortitude. Their training included a trans-oceanic expedition from Goa to Rio de Janeiro via Cape Town, a two-handed sailing mission to Port Blair, and a recent sortie to Mauritius.
Under the mentorship of acclaimed circumnavigator Cdr Abhilash Tomy (Retd.), the officers are set to represent India’s maritime prowess on the global stage. This expedition highlights the Indian Navy’s revitalized focus on sailing, drawing inspiration from vessels like INS Tarangini and INS Sudarshini and pioneering voyages on INSV Mhadei and Tarini.
The recently unveiled logo for Navika Sagar Parikrama II embodies this spirit. The octagonal shape reflects the Indian Navy, while the sun and compass symbolize guidance and resilience in the face of challenging seas. The sailboat against the vast ocean is a powerful emblem of adventure, reinforcing the Navy’s commitment to promoting gender equality and maritime excellence.
