These games were originally scheduled to take place at the KSCA Alur Stadium. However, due to concerns over crowd management at the outskirts venue, the Karnataka State Cricket Association had moved the fixtures to Chinnaswamy Stadium. That plan, however, did not get the final clearance.
Why police rejected the Chinnaswamy Stadium request?
A joint inspection was carried out at the stadium by a committee that included the Bengaluru city police commissioner along with officials from the public works department, fire and emergency services, and the health department. The inspection report was submitted to the Greater Bengaluru Authority commissioner, who heads the panel.
Following the inspection, the police made their position clear. According to the city police commissioner, the stadium currently does not have adequate facilities to safely conduct matches. Permission, they said, will only be considered once the required work is completed. As of now, the request to stage matches at Chinnaswamy Stadium stands rejected.
Security concerns add to the delay
The timing of the matches also worked against the proposal. The December 24 fixture falls close to Christmas, when police resources are heavily engaged in managing celebrations across Bengaluru’s central business district.

Centre of Excellence becomes the new venue
With uncertainty looming, the KSCA had already prepared a backup plan. The BCCI Centre of Excellence was identified as an alternative venue, and the matches will now be played there.
The Centre of Excellence has three grounds, with the two matches scheduled on Grounds Two and One respectively. Importantly, these games will be held behind closed doors, as the facility does not have provisions for spectators.
This effectively means fans will not get to see Kohli return to action at Chinnaswamy Stadium just yet.
Why this delay carries more weight?
This was expected to be Virat Kohli’s first appearance at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium since the June 4 stampede outside the venue during RCB’s IPL victory celebrations. That incident had already cast a shadow over matchday operations at the stadium.
During the inspection meeting, officials also discussed the implementation of the Justice John Michael Cunha Commission report, which includes 17 recommendations related to safety and infrastructure. Until these concerns are addressed, permissions are likely to remain difficult.
Kohli wastes no time on the field
Despite the venue change, Virat Kohli hit the ground running. He joined the Delhi squad for net practice on Tuesday and trained for about an hour. Wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant was also present, along with Ishant Sharma and Navdeep Saini.
The focus, for Kohli at least, remains firmly on cricket—even if the setting has changed.
