The FTSE 250 index is a basket of the 250 publicly listed companies on the London Stock Exchange that don’t quite have a large enough market cap to enter the FTSE 100 index. Essentially, they are the leading mid-cap blue chip companies in the UK, which is why this index acts as a bellwether for the British economy.
Although the FTSE 100 index often gets thrust into the media spotlight, the FTSE 250 is full of well-established innovators pushing the boundaries in their respective professions. Below, we’ll do a deep dive into three of the standout FTSE 250 companies poised for an exciting 2025.
Mitchells & Butlers
The UK hospitality sector is still on a knife-edge at present. With rising business rates and energy bills, it’s been a real challenge for many companies just to stay afloat. One firm that appears to be bucking this trend is Mitchells & Butlers, the owner of some of the most popular value pub and restaurant chains in the UK. These include Toby Carvery, Harvester and All Bar One.
The company has embarked on a modernisation of several of its venues and optimising its day-to-day operations to try and improve profit margins. Its ability to balance heritage with innovation is driving its success, with app-based ordering and partnering with online takeaway delivery portals like Uber Eats, coupled with an increased focus on premium menu offerings, has helped to diversify its customer base ready for 2025.
Playtech
Playtech has established itself as a titan of the iGaming world. It’s famed for its B2B iGaming technology solutions, which have been adopted by some of the biggest online casino operators in the world. This includes online sportsbooks, poker rooms and online casinos.
In a bid to diversify its portfolio and general market reach, Playtech has embarked on a string of strategic acquisitions in recent years. This began all the way back in 2017, with the astute move to purchase Eyecon, bringing a host of popular titles like the Fluffy Favourites slot series under the Playtech umbrella. In September, the firm said it was “aggressively” pursuing growth opportunities in the North American market, where it’s seen revenue triple in the last 12 months, showing they’re continuing to pursue strategic acquisitions.
Wizz Air
Wizz Air is one of the fastest-growing budget airlines in the UK. The low-cost carrier, which primarily focuses on air travel into central and Eastern Europe, has a bold vision to expand into the global air travel market. Wizz Air has stood out from the crowd thanks to its ability to achieve competitive airfares while soaking up untapped potential in multiple underserved routes.
Next year, Wizz Air aims to grow its fleet and invest in more fuel-efficient aircraft to further improve its bottom line and meet or even surpass new environmental regulations. It is also set to launch new routes into the Middle East and Asia, which makes Wizz Air the undisputed airline to watch in the FTSE 250 next year.
With global liquidity likely to improve next year and interest rates expected to gradually decline through the end of 2025, there is a sense that the financial climate will be ripe for growth in many of the mid-cap, blue-chip firms.
