Former media executive Indrani Mukerjea, jailed on charges of the murder of her daughter Sheena Bora in 2015, has claimed in a letter to the CBI that Sheena Bora is in fact alive, according to media reports.
Mukerjea, in Mumbai’s Byculla jail since 2015, claimed a fellow inmate told her she had seen Bora in Kashmir, The Indian Express reported.
Mukerjea has asked the CBI to search for Bora, according to The New Indian Express.
Mukerjea’s lawyer Sana Khan confirmed that she had written a letter. Khan said she had no details about its content.
Sheena Bora had allegedly been strangled by Mukerjea in a car on April 24, 2012, and the subsequent developments in the case grabbed nationwide interest.
The case came to light in 2015, after which Mukerjea was arrested. Sheena Bora’s remains were supposedly found burnt and dumped in a forest in Maharashtra’s Raigad district.
Investigators alleged that Indrani’s Mukerjea’s husband Peter Mukerjea, her former spouse Sanjeev Khanna and driver Shyamvar Rai, who later turned approver, were accomplices in the crime. All three were arrested, with Peter Mukerjea out on bail in March 2020.
In August this year, the CBI had declared in a special court in Mumbai that it has closed the investigation in the case.
