Reviewed: Akshay Kumar-Katrina Kaif starrer ‘Sooryavanshi’ Is Trademark Rohit Shetty

Sooryavanshi, starring Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif has had a long wait to get into theatres, owing to the pandemic rules. At first watch, it has all the makings of another blockbuster for Rohit Shetty and his cop-universe trilogy, that had Ajay Devgn and Ranveer Singh in ‘Singham’ and ‘Simmba’.

Akshay Kumar stars in the lead role in Sooryavanshi directed by Rohit Shetty. Twitter

Sooryavanshi is an out-and-out Rohit Shetty mainstream Bollywood masala cop-flick with Akshay Kumar in the leading role as a DGP, and with cameos from Ajay Devgn, who plays Singham, and Ranveer Singh, who plays Simmba, in the last 30 minutes. Shetty’s trademark hiigh-octane action with cars getting blown up, hand-combat and explosions galore in the climax will be enough to satiate die-hard moviegoers at the theatres, after a long wait for movie halls to open owing to the pandemic.

The film is set in the aftermath of the 1993 bomb blasts in Mumbai. 13 years later, when a terrorist group is back in action and regrouping for another mission, DCP Veer Sooryavanshi, (Akshay Kumar), the head of Mumbai Anti-Terrorism Squad, is assigned the task of foiling the plot and catching the suspects.

Sooryavanshi isn’t driven by a great script or plot, but we presume that’s not what you paid the ticket money for. If over-the-top action is what you want, Akshay Kumar delivers. There’s romance between Sooryavanshi and his wife Riya (played by Katrina Kaif, whose Hindi diction has come a long way), their relationship with their son Aryan, and his relationships with colleagues in the ATS force for an entertainment smorgasbord.

And there’s also a recreation of the song ‘Tip Tip Barsa Paani‘ with Kaif and Kumar, from Kumar’s 90s hit , ‘Mohre’ with the sensous Raveena Tandon in a yellow saree, added in for good measure.

What do you think of the song, Will you watch the movie, is it a guaranteed blockbuster, as movie theatres open after a long hiatus?
