Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled a statue of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose at India Gate, as the historic ‘Rajpath,’ the arterial road connecting India Gate to Rashtrapati Bhavan was renamed ‘Kartavya Path’ as an ode to shedding India’s colonial past and as a symbol of public empowerment.
‘Today, we are filling the picture of tomorrow with new colours, leaving behind the past. Today this new aura is visible everywhere, it is the aura of confidence of New India’ the PM said in an address to a gathering at the unveiling.

The PM said ‘Rajpath, the symbol of slavery, has become a matter of history from today and has been erased forever. Today a new history has been created in the form of ‘Kartavya Path’. I congratulate all the countrymen for their freedom from yet another identity of slavery, in this Amrit Kaal of independence.’
PM Modi also spoke about unveiling the statue of one of India’s greatest freedom fighters Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.
‘At the time of slavery, there was a statue of the representative of the British Raj. Today the country has also brought to life a modern, strong India by establishing the statue of Netaji at the same place,’ he added.
Recalling Netaji’s contribution to the freedom movement, PM Modi observed ‘Subhas Chandra Bose was such a great man who was beyond the challenge of position and resources. His acceptance was such that the whole world considered him a leader. He had courage and self-respect. He had ideas, he had visions. He had leadership abilities and had policies.’
The ‘Kartavya Path’ is would represent India’s democratic past and ideals. The prime minister then went on to speak about expanding the country’s cultural infrastructure along with its roads and digital infrastructure.
PM Modi invited every citizen of the country to visit the newly-constructed vista.
