According to a Reuters report, at least 25 people were killed and dozens injured after Islamist militants rammed an explosive-laden truck into a police station in northwest Pakistan on Tuesday.
Multiple suicide bombers stormed the security compound, detonating explosives inside the premises, which is believed to be serve as an army camp as well.
The terrorists also opened fire on the security personnel, leading to a shootout. The militants first rammed the truck into the boundary wall of the police station in the Dera Ismail Khan district, while others started attacking with guns.
During the shootout, the police also gunned down two militants, according ARY News channel, as reported by PTI.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has witnessed a rise in violence with several deadly attacks, the province is a former stronghold of the militant Pakistani Taliban group, also known as Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, or TTP, as reported by AP.
The Pakistani Taliban, who have stepped up attacks on security forces since 2022, though a separate group, is closely allied with the Afghan Taliban.
A recently-emerged Pakistani Taliban group, the Tahreek-e-Jihad Pakistan (TJP), has claimed responsibility for the attack that took place close to tribal regions bordering Afghanistan, according to an India Today report.
Dera Ismail Khan is located near South Waziristan.
Pakistan’s army carried out multiple operations against militants there after some attacked an army-run school, killing more than 150 people, mostly school children, in 2014.
