Sushil Kumar, India’s two-time Olympic medalist wrestler, was arrested in connection with the murder of a 23-year-old fellow wrestler at the Chhatrasal Stadium in Delhi.
Police registered an FIR for murder, abduction and criminal conspiracy against Kumar, who was absconding for the past few weeks.
The deceased, Sagar Rana, died while two of his friends were injured after they were allegedly assaulted by Kumar and some other wrestlers on May 4, when they were training at the famed wrestling ground.
Victims in the case alleged that Sushil was present at the spot when the young wrestler was killed. Allegations had emerged that Sushil and his associates picked on Sagar in retaliation for an alleged verbal slight.
As it turns out, police sources have revealed that several criminals are alleged to have taken shelter in a flat belonging to Kumar and the brawl was supposedly in relation to this particular property, shedding light on the wrestler-criminal nexus in the New Delhi property rental market.
Sushil Kumar shot to fame when he won a bronze at the Asian Games in 2018. He then finished on the podium at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and followed it up with a silver at the 2012 London Olympics, going on to become sporting legend, respected by peers and juniors alike.
Kumar has been sent to 6-day police custody amid further investigations.
