Novak Djokovic wins 10th Australian Open, ties Nadal at 22 Grand Slams, returns to World No. 1

Novak Djokovic claimed a record-tying 22nd Grand Slam title with Rafael Nadal on Sunday when he won the Australian Open.

The Serbian legend defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-3, 7-6(4), 7-6(5) in the championship match at Melbourne Park to claim his 66th major title, seven clear of both Nadal and Federer, who retired recently.

Djokovic, at 35, became the third-oldest man in the Open Era to triumph at the Australian Open, this being his 10th title down under.

With his victory against Tsitsipas in the final, a repeat of their 2021 French open clash, the Serbian has also won 17 consecutive matches against Top 5 opponents at the tournament.

The triumph will return Djokovic to World No. 1 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings on Monday, when he will begin his record 374th week in top spot.

Djokovic has basically won everything in tennis now, and his opponent himself endorsed the champion in the GOAT debate.

‘He is the greatest to have ever held a tennis racket,’ Tsitsipas said.
