Netflix has signed an exclusive deal for a documentary series with Akash Ambani and Shloka Mehta, who are going to tie the knot on March 9. The show will be called The Wedding Academy.
Inside sources tell us that the Netflix crew was present at the Harry Potter– themed pre-wedding bash in Mumbai, making them the only commoners to receive an invite. “As part of this deal, we will get all the footage of the pre-ring, post-ring, multiple pre- and post-engagement ceremonies that have taken place in the last one year,” said Aman Mehra, head of Netflix India’s content team. Mehra, who is invited for the final mega pre-wedding bash planned tonight added, “We feel there is sufficient footage in our hands to split the wedding to three seasons.”
According to Mehra, the Ambanis and Piramals are planning separate e-auctions for clothes and props used at the mehendi, sangeet, the wedding day, multiple receptions, and honeymoons. “We will bid for those events as well. The wedding has so many unique aspects that India has never seen before. For example, the wedding invitation card. The amount of money they spent on this card, I didn’t spend that much even on my honeymoon.”
Apart from the celebrations the documentary will also focus on the challenges faced by the wedding planners. To create something unique every day is a task. Event organiser Swati Sharma added, “There is lot of pressure on my team. Initially they asked us for six weddingbashes in Mumbai, excluding the three winter wonderland bashes we organised in Switzerland. Just like they give more data to Jio users, they expected something similar from us. They wanted me to fit six more pre-wedding bashes before the sangeet ceremony.”
After Harry Potter, Swati’s team came up with Chota Bheem, Motu Patlu, Ninja Hattori and Doraemon themes. But other than Chota Bheem everything else was rejected. “We are doing tonight’s final pre-wedding bash on Taimur. All the guests for the party have been asked to wear a Taimur mask and carry the doll. Chote Nawab is going to choreograph a dance tonight; everyone including our Bollywood stars will dance behind him following his steps.”
There will also be a special segment from the Isha Ambani wedding. Sources tell us that the G-U-J-J-U dance sequence will be part of the documentary. And “Pankhida Ho Pankhida” is likely to be the theme song for The Wedding Academy.
There are plans to give lifetime achievement awards to yesteryear’s wedding stars like Nickayanka, DeepVeer, Virushka during the function today.
