Sayan Chatterjee, Mumbai/Puri, 5 December, 2024 – Mumbai and Puri became the epicentres of grandeur on December 4, 2024, as the nation celebrated Navy Day, honouring the Indian Navy’s pivotal role in securing India’s maritime sovereignty. This year’s celebrations carried special significance, marking the 53rd anniversary of Operation Trident—a historic naval offensive during the 1971 Indo-Pak War that solidified the Navy’s strategic prowess.
Remembering Operation Trident
In 1971, tensions between India and Pakistan were at a peak. The Pakistan Air Force had already launched a surprise intrusion into Indian airspace, targeting multiple Indian Air Force bases, though these strikes caused no significant damage. At the same time, the Pakistani Army was locked in combat with the Mukti Bahini (Bengali guerrilla freedom fighters) and an Indian Army detachment in the Battle of Garibpur, a key episode in the Bangladesh Liberation War.
During this period, the Port of Karachi served as the headquarters of the Pakistan Navy, housing nearly its entire fleet. Karachi’s strategic importance was immense as a hub for Pakistan’s maritime trade. A blockade of the port would have been catastrophic for Pakistan’s economy. Recognizing this, the Pakistani High Command fortified Karachi Harbour against potential air and naval strikes, with its airspace secured by strike aircraft from nearby airfields.
In late 1971, with rising hostilities and Pakistan’s declaration of a national emergency on 23 November, the Indian Naval Headquarters (NHQ) in Delhi, in coordination with the Western Naval Command (WNC), devised an audacious plan to attack Karachi. A strike group was formed under the WNC for this critical mission, code-named Operation Trident. Navy Day is celebrated annually to honour the success of Operation Trident and the Indian Navy’s remarkable victory during the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971.
Mumbai: A Spectacle of Heritage and Precision
At Mumbai’s iconic Gateway of India, the celebrations began with a vibrant Beating Retreat and Tattoo Ceremony. The Sea Cadet Corps enthralled the audience with their traditional Sailor’s Hornpipe dance, while the Naval Band’s stirring performance added musical vigour. The Continuity Drill by Western Naval Command personnel demonstrated the Navy’s discipline and precision. The evening crescendoed with an Operational Demonstration featuring a thrilling helicopter flypast by INS Shikra and a display of naval manoeuvres. Dignitaries, including Maharashtra Governor C. P. Radhakrishnan, attended the event, which brought the Navy’s heritage and modern capabilities to life.
Puri: A Show of Strength and Innovation
In Puri, Odisha, the serene Blue Flag Beach transformed into a dynamic stage for the Eastern Naval Command’s Operational Demonstration. President Smt. Droupadi Murmu, the Chief Guest, joined Adm. Dinesh K. Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff, in witnessing the awe-inspiring showcase. The demonstration featured 15 state-of-the-art warships, MiG 29K fighter jets, MH 60R helicopters, and precision operations by the elite Marine Commandos (MARCOS). Combat beach reconnaissance by Navy and Army personnel showcased inter-service coordination. The event concluded with a Laser and Drone Show and the illumination of offshore ships, symbolizing the Navy’s blend of tradition and technological innovation.
