Mumbai citizens were left stunned by unexpected weather disturbances on May 7, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a Yellow Alert for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and Palghar. What started as an ordinary day soon turned into one characterized by gusty winds, dust storms, and traffic congestion, marking the uncertainty of climate patterns in India’s financial hub.
Sudden Weather Shift Paralyzes Transport and Visibility
The IMD had forecasted light to moderate rain along with thunderstorms and gusty winds of up to 50–60 km/h, leading to mayhem in Mumbai. Dust storms had lashed through certain areas of the city, sharply lowering visibility. The Western Railway’s functioning was briefly disrupted when a strip of cloth had become stuck in the overhead wire near Dahisar.
Suburban trains, the lifeline of Mumbai, were running late on various routes, causing anxiety for thousands of passengers in evening hours. Air travel too suffered, with numerous flights being delayed or diverted at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport because of poor visibility.
Rainfall Patterns Across the City
While coastal regions like South Mumbai received only a light drizzle, northern and central suburbs witnessed moderate rain. Places like Borivali, Kandivali, Andheri, Lower Parel, Bhayandar, and Powai had moderate showers. The rain combined with wind made motorcyclists take to the footpaths, and construction materials were swept away by the powerful gusts, raising concern over public safety.
Thunderstorm Warning Extended for 3–4 Hours
The IMD also issued a warning that thunderstorms will continue for a few hours more, particularly over isolated areas of the affected districts. Lightning and brief but severe bursts of rain are expected to be experienced. The weather office asked people to remain indoors, cancel non-essential travel plans, and watch out for flying objects.
Climate Variability and Urban Preparedness
This sudden weather occurrence underscores the vulnerabilities created by mounting climate variability, especially in densely populated urban areas such as Mumbai. Urban systems are often stretched to their limits by such events, ranging from flooding roads to interrupted transport networks.
