The Prime Minister was welcomed by senior officials of the Biden administration and India’s envoy to the US Taranjit Singh Sandhu on the tarmac, as he arrived in Washinton DC.
He was welcomed by India’s Ambassador to the US Taranjit Singh Sandhu, along with Defence officials Brigadier Anoop Singhal, Air Commodore Anjan Bhadra and naval attache Commodore Nirbhaya Bapna.
A huge crowd of Indian Americans had arrived at Joint Base Andrews to welcome the Indian Prime Minister, which is becoming a normal sight at official visits now, especially after the ‘Howdy Modi’ event held in Texas in 2019.
The crowd stood in the rain and waved Indian flags to welcome the PM.
On the agenda
Modi was received by US Department of State officials including T H Brian McKeon, US Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources at Joint Base Andrews in Washington DC.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to have as many as eight meetings today, including with Vice President Kamala Harris.
President Joe Biden will host PM Modi at the White House tomorrow – the first in-person meeting between the two leaders, owing to the pandemic situation. The two met virtually on at least three occasions – the Quad summit in March, the climate change summit in April, and the G-7 summit in June this year.
PM Modi will also attend the Quad summit and address the 76th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
Prime Minister Narendra Modi called his visit an “occasion to strengthen strategic partnership with the US and consolidate ties with Japan and Australia.”
As of now, the US has ruled out India’s participation in the strategic QUAD alliance
