Mirwaiz Farooq Murder: Two absconding Hizbul Mujahideen terrorists arrested in Jammu and Kashmir

Two terrorists of the Hizbul Mujahideen were arrested by the Jammu and Kashmir Police on Tuesday in the Mirwaiz Farooq assassination case.

The two accused were nabbed by the police 33 years after Mirwaiz (head priest) Mohammad Farooq, Chairman of the ‘All Jammu and Kashmir Awami Action Committee,’ was killed on May 21, 1990.

Addressing a press conference, Special DG CID Jammu and Kashmir, RR Swain, said the two terrorists, identified as Javaid Bhat and Zahoor Ahmed Bhat, would be handed over to the CBI.

Swain told reporters that out of the five accused in the case, four were absconding. The main accused along with another accused, Abdullah Bangaroo and Ab Rehman Shigan, were killed in encounters.

The lone arrested terrorist that underwent trial, Ayub Dar was convicted for life. He is currently serving his sentence in Srinagar central jail.

Swain said it was Zahoor who had pulled the trigger after entering the bedroom of the Mirwaiz.

‘With this all accused of Mirwaiz killing have been brought to justice,’ he further said.

J&K Police said the duo had gone underground and were hiding in Nepal and Pakistan before returning back to Kashmir a few years ago.
