MCD Elections 2022Delhi's toxic air is a main talking point in the city's municipal elections

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and leader of the AAP thanked the people for the victory and sought the cooperation of the BJP and the Congress as well as the ‘blessings’ of Narendra Modi, as the AAP wrested control of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and promised to improve civic amenities in the national capital.

Addressing party workers at the AAP headquarters, Kejriwal said, ‘Will try to live up to expectations of people, urge parties to come together to improve Delhi.’

The candidates duke it out over 250 wards in the MCD elections, needing 126 to win a majority. The BJP which has gotten hold of 104 seats so far, has bucked the trend predicted by exit polls, which predicted far less for the national ruler, whosre reign of 15 years at the municipal level of the capital city seems to have come to an end. The Congress has managed to stake a claim over seven seats, consistent with its current national standing.

This was the first election after the MCD was reunified earlier this year. The polls, which took place on December 4, saw a voter turnout of only 50.48% — just over 73 lakh people from the total of 1.45 crore eligible voters.

The State Election Commission shows that South Delhi saw the lowest voter turnout in the municipal polls, which is reminiscent of the turnout in the upscale southern neighborhoods of sister alpha city Mumbai.

The more rural pockets of and parts of Northeast Delhi, saw the highest polling percentages.
