What attracts pests to enter and enjoy their stay at your house? In this article, we’ll talk about the 3 main reasons why they find your home attractive.

You can also take other preventive measures to keep the pests at bay, like using ultrasonic pest repellers from https://everpest.com/collections/all. Do your best to keep your home safe. With that said, here are the reasons.

  • There Is Food Lying Around

Food isn’t only a primal need for humans – they are also a basic requirement for pest survival. This is why pests come out of where they originally belong, finding places where there’s a constant supply of food. So if you’re finding yourself having the same problem of pests making themselves comfortable in your house, again and again, food is the top reason why.

How to avoid it: There’s nothing better than a clean house. You should also always check if any crumbs are lying around.

The following are what you should do to make sure these critters don’t have the food supply they need:

  • Lock away food in proper containers.  Choose containers that these pests can’t chew on – like glass or thick plastic. You can also keep your food in your refrigerator. Habitually clean your cupboards and drawer as well.
  • Scrub spills thoroughly. Especially if you have wooden furniture or a tablecloth, you need to make sure that the spills are well brushed.
  • Clean areas where food might be. The kitchen and the dining area are the usual places where food remains can be found. But if you tend to hang around the balcony, the living room, or your bedroom with food – you should also regularly vacuum and wipe these places down.
  • Wash dishes immediately. No, you shouldn’t leave your dirty dishes in the sink and just wash them in the morning. It’s better to leave the sink empty and clean so the critters don’t have the time to pounce on the remaining food stuck on your used plates.
  • Water Is Constantly Available

Just like humans, pests don’t only need food – they also need water. Often an overlooked fact, critters love staying in damp and moist places. The excess humidity helps them thrive, and they need water to live. So if your area is dry, it’ll be less attractive to critters because high temperatures or low humidities kill insects.

How to avoid it: Do your best to cut their water sources. If you have a high humidity atmosphere, do your best to bring it down.

Here are some things you can try to lessen humidity:

  • Check your pipes. Make sure that all of your pipes are working properly. Any leak or excess water should raise your concern. Aside from your water being contaminated and mild spores forming, pests like termites and rodents will find that area an easy way to enter your home.
  • Buy a dehumidifier. In simplest terms, a dehumidifier removes moisture in a specific place. It’s often used to relieve allergies and asthma, but it will also help make your home less accommodating to pests who love dampness.
  • Grow plants. House plants make your home inviting, but they can also dehumidify. These natural dehumidifiers harvest moisture in the air through their leaves. The more plants you have in your home, the less humid your place will be.

Some of the best plants you can use are:

  • Spider Plants
  • Peace Lily
  • Tillandsia
  • Bromeliad
  • Orchids
  • English Ivy
  • Cactus
  • Palms
  • Clutters Are Everywhere

The more clutter you have at home, the more places these pests can hide and use as their breeding ground. If you think about it, pests look for the same things humans need to live – food, water, and shelter. This clutter around and in your house will be the perfect shelter for them.

These pests love dark and moist places – like the back of drawers and cabinets, the basement, and the attic. Areas that you use for storage purposes should also be cleaned, so pests don’t have the time to build their nests in them.

How to avoid: A place free of mess is pleasing to the eyes and frustrating to pests.

Here are some ways you can do to declutter:

  • Don’t hoard. You might like storing miscellaneous things thinking that they might get handy in the future. Even if some of them will, a good part won’t and will just end up a part of the trinkets you have under your bed or in your secret compartment. Let go of things you don’t need.
  • Make yourself accountable. A wise way to avoid clutter is not to bring in any. Think first before you take home any free goods that you might end up not needing. You can also set a condition for yourself, such as you can only bring home an item if you promise to let go of another that you already have at home.
  • Share and give away. After spring cleaning, you can pick what you no longer need and put it in a box. You can send it as a donation to a charity or even do a yard sale.
