Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde appealed to the public to maintain calm after the protests turned violent.
Protesters ransacked some shops and vehicles at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Chowk in the city, demanding action.
They were taking objection to the alleged use of Tipu Sultan’s image and an ‘objectionable’ audio message used as a social media ‘status’ by some locals.
Earlier this week, police registered a case against four persons for allegedly carrying posters of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb during a procession in Ahmednagar district, a video of which had gone viral.
The police had to resort to lathicharge to disperse the protesters, officials said.
Reports emerged of clashes between two groups from other parts of the town as well.
‘Investigation is underway and action will be taken against those found guilty,’ Shinde said.
Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who also holds the Home portfolio, is also monitoring the situation, officials said.
‘There is no forgiveness in Maharashtra for those who praise Aurangzeb. Police are also taking action. At the same time, it is our collective responsibility to ensure that peace is maintained,’ Mr Fadnavis said.
Security has been increased in the city to avoid any untoward incident.
