MumbaiMumbai issues yellow alert for thunderstorms, rain

On May 7, 2025, Maharashtra is in for a drastic change in weather with thundershowers and gusty winds hitting the state.

Maharashtra is experiencing abnormal weather for the month of May. Normally hot and dry, the state will get light rain, thunder, and windy conditions, particularly in parts such as Mumbai, Thane, Pune, and Konkan, as foreseen by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Weather is likely to usher in some changes, influencing day-to-day life and cultivation. Citizens must remain ready and take precautions accordingly.

General Weather Forecast on May 7, 2025

Temperature and Humidity

The temperature in Maharashtra on May 7 will be an average of 28°C to 33°C. But there are areas like Vidarbha and Marathwada that may experience the temperature reaching a high of 35°C. Night temperatures are expected to remain moderate, varying between 24°C and 28°C. The humidity too will be on the higher side, varying from 70% to 85%, giving an impression of very hot weather in spite of rain.

Rainfall and Gusty Winds

Light rain is likely in Mumbai, Thane, Pune, and parts of Konkan. The rainfall may be between 0.7 mm and 5.5 mm, with the chance of thundershowers during the day. Gusty winds will pass through the area, with a speed of 19 km/h to 30 km/h, particularly in the evening and night.

Regional Forecasts

Mumbai and Konkan

Mumbai, with a high of 30°C and a low of 28°C, can expect light rain and thunder, especially in suburbs such as Thane and Kalyan. The rain will be light, about 0.7 mm, but there will be gusty winds. Konkan’s Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg will experience light rain and wind.

Yellow Alert: The IMD has given a Yellow Alert for Mumbai on May 6 and 7, advising citizens to remain alert and vigilant during the change in weather.

Pune and Western Maharashtra

Pune will see a high of 34°C and a low of 24°C. Light rain and thundershowers are predicted, particularly in the afternoon, with up to 5.5 mm rainfall. Rest of Western Maharashtra, including Satara, Sangli, and Kolhapur, can expect light rain, albeit hot and humid weather.

Vidarbha and Marathwada

In Vidarbha (Nagpur, Amravati, and Chandrapur) and Marathwada (Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Jalna), the temperature can go up to 35°C. Light rain with thunder and gusty winds will be experienced in these regions. There could even be hailstorms or heavy gusts of wind in the evening in some areas.

North Maharashtra

Places such as Nashik, Dhule, and Jalgaon will remain humid and hot with temperatures varying from 32°C to 34°C. The area might as well turn dry, while it is still a possibility in certain places, slight rain has been indicated.

Agricultural impacts and Rural Area

Vidarbha and Marathwada farmers will receive some respite from the heat because of light rains, but hailstorms and strong winds could ruin their crops. Farmers are recommended to take special care while harvesting or guarding their crops during this time.

Precautions for the Public

Considering the anticipated gusty winds and rains, it is advisable to carry an umbrella or raincoat, especially in Mumbai, Pune, and Konkan. Individuals should also make sure that their home drains are clear to prevent water accumulation.

In order to remain safe from strong winds, do not stay close to trees or weak buildings, and avoid electricity poles or wires, as lightning strikes are expected.

Meteorological Expert Opinion

K. S. Hosalikar, erstwhile director of IMD and a weather scientist, offered his views on X on May 4, 2025, indicating thundershowers would influence large areas of Maharashtra, including Mumbai, on May 6 and 7. He stressed citizens should remain watchful and ready for any kind of inconvenience posed by the climate.
