The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Sunday said it has successfully carried out the orbit reduction manoeuvre of India’s third moon mission Chandrayaan-3, a day after inserting it into the lunar orbit.
ISRO Chairman S Somnath on Chandrayaan-3 ‘Everything is going fine now. There will be a series of manoeuvres until it lands (on the Moon) on 23rd August. The satellite is healthy.’
‘Chandrayaan-3 is going very well. Last night we had an orbit reduction in the moon’s orbit from something like 18,000 kilometres to around 4,600 kilometres and 165 kilometers at its closest point to the Moon’, Mr Somnath added.
India’s third lunar mission – Chandrayaan-3 – is in good health and its most critical phase will be the orbit determination process when the spacecraft starts moving closer to the moon from the 100 km circular orbit, ISRO said.
ISRO also released video of the moon captured by Chandrayaan-3 as it enters lunar orbit.

The ISRO has released first ever-images of the moon as captured by Chandrayaan-3 during Lunar orbit insertion. ISRO put out the video with the caption Chandrayaan-3 Mission: The Moon, as viewed by Chandrayaan-3 during Lunar Orbit Insertion.
Chandrayaan-3 is progressing smoothly and is in good health, according to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman S. Somnath.
In a recent update, he confirmed that the spacecraft is functioning as expected and is on track for its scheduled landing on the Moon on August 23.
“Chandrayaan-3 is going very well. Last night we had an orbit reduction in the moon’s orbit from something like 18,000 kilometres to around 4,600 kilometres and 165 kilometers at its closest point to the Moon. Subsequently, it will again come down as there will be some more maneuvers until it lands on August 23. So everything is going fine now. Satellite is healthy,” Somnath said.
