IPL 2024 Schedule:MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli face off first

Former Indian skippers MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli will face off in the opening match of the 2024 Indian Premier League as the defending champions Chennai Super Kings host the Royal Challengers Bangalore in Chennai on March 22. IPL Schedule 2024 will kick off on March 22 and is expected to be hosted in India despite general elections.

With the T20 World Cup to begin starting June 1, it is expected that the IPL will be concluded latest by the end of May.

It’s not the first time the league has been staged at the same time as the general elections. Back in 2009, the second season of the IPL was moved to South Africa while in 2014, the first 20 matches of the season were played in the UAE and the rest in India.

As per the format, ten teams are divided into two groups of five. In the group stage, each team plays 14 games facing the other four teams in their group two times each (one home and one away game), four teams in the other group once, and the remaining team two times.

Hardik Pandya’s comeback to Mumbai Indians has in the past few months caused a flutter. The former Gujarat Titans captains has been promoted to that role at MI, replacing India’s all-format skipper Rohit Sharma.

Gujarat Titans, the other finalist of the 2023 season, will make a blockbuster start to their campaign against their former captain Pandya’s Mumbai Indians in Ahmedabad on March 24.

The BCCI released a partial IPL 2024 schedule for the season – for the first 17 days (March 22 to April 7) during which 21 matches will be played. In this period, there will be four double-headers.

Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals will play the first afternoon fixture of the IPL 2024 schedule on March 23 in Mohali, while Kolkata Knight Riders’ season begins at home against Sunrisers Hyderabad later on the same day. Rajasthan Royals also get their season underway at home, against Lucknow Super Giants on the first Sunday of the season.

This first phase of the season will not have any matches in Delhi with the Delhi Capitals playing their two home games in Vizag.

BCCI is expected to announce the remainder of the schedule after the Election Commission of India announces the General Election dates.
