Sayan Chatterjee, New Delhi, 16 September 2024: In the wake of Typhoon Yagi’s devastating impact across Southeast Asia, India has launched significant Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) missions, underscoring the nation’s commitment not only as a regional power but also as a responsible global actor. India’s rapid aid mobilisation to Cambodia, Vietnam, and Myanmar highlights the importance of HADR efforts, emphasizing that such missions transcend mere military exercises to become essential diplomatic gestures fostering goodwill and co-operation among nations.
Operation Sadbhav: Indian Air Force’s Swift Response:
The Indian Air Force (IAF), under Operation Sadbhav, swiftly deployed its C-17 Globemaster aircraft to provide critical relief aid to Cambodia and Vietnam, countries reeling from widespread flooding caused by Typhoon Yagi. The C-17’s heavy-lift capabilities, known for transporting large quantities of essential supplies across long distances, proved invaluable in these relief efforts. At Hindan Air Force Station, the rapid and efficient loading of 35 tons of aid for Vietnam and 10 tons for Cambodia was flawlessly executed. Supplies destined for Vietnam included water purification equipment, containers, blankets, kitchen utensils, and solar lanterns. Meanwhile, Cambodia received power generators, hygiene supplies, mosquito nets, blankets, and sleeping bags. The coordinated response from the IAF showcases India’s capability to act swiftly in providing life-saving resources to disaster-stricken regions, further strengthening its diplomatic ties with these nations.
Indian Navy: A Rapid Response to Myanmar’s Crisis:
Simultaneously, the Indian Navy launched its own HADR operations in response to flash floods in Myanmar, triggered by the same typhoon. The Eastern Naval Command, in collaboration with the Eastern Fleet, executed an overnight loading operation at Visakhapatnam, where essential relief supplies, including HADR gear, drinking water, rations, and medicines, were stocked aboard an Indian naval warship. This swift response underscores the Navy’s ability to rapidly mobilize resources despite the short notice, reaffirming India’s readiness to assist neighbouring nations in need.
HADR: A Blend of Military Capability and Diplomatic Intent:
While HADR operations leverage military assets such as aircraft and warships, their true significance lies in their diplomatic nature. These missions go beyond disaster relief, symbolizing solidarity and a commitment to regional stability. By providing critical assistance during natural calamities, India is showcasing its military prowess and strengthening diplomatic ties, fostering cooperation, and building trust with its Southeast Asian neighbors.
India’s timely response to the crises in Cambodia, Vietnam, and Myanmar reinforces its growing role as a humanitarian leader in the Indo-Pacific region. These HADR operations highlight how such efforts bridge military capability and diplomatic outreach, ensuring that assistance reaches those in need while reinforcing international relationships built on trust and goodwill.
